Surfing Camp for Kids with Autism

I’m a huge proponent of summer camps for kids with autism which leave behind the direct instruction and treat the child on a more holistic level. I think this is ultimately vital to the child’s social/emotional growth and development. Recently I came across this summer camp based out of California called Surfer’s Healing. The program was founded, and is run by, parents of a child with autism. They seem to really understand the need for outdoor education in the autism community.
Just because a child has autism doesn’t mean they should be cooped up during the summer months. I know that “summer camp” for many families, especially in these economic times, is not feasible…but this does not mean that you shouldn’t plan outdoor activities for your child daily. Go for a hike, a bike ride or a swim. Go to the park, the beach, or the zoo. Go go-karting, rollerskating, or rock-collecting. Get out of the house and go have some fun. Every activity can be a learning experience. Sunshine is good for the soul. Your child will thank you.
