Exploring Feelings: Cognitive Behavior Therapy to Manage Anxiety

This is a program for use with children ages 9-12. It was originally designed for use with children with Asperger’s Syndrome, but has been used with children with other ASDs. There are workbook materials for each of the six two-hour sessions which are part of the protocol as well as projects which are to be completed at home with the child’s parents.

The program is designed to be implemented by teachers, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists or parents without the necessity of specific training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy. The six sessions which are part of this program cover topics such as positive emotions (happiness and relaxation), exploring the physiology, thinking, behavior and speech around anxiety, conceptual toolbox for fixing feelings (i.e., how to release emotional energy and relaxation tools), using a “temperature gauge” to measure the intensity of emotions, social stories, and designing a personalized CBT program for themselves to manage anxiety.
