Resources for families of people with autism can be extremely expensive. That’s why I’m always looking for helpful resources to limit the amount of out-of-pocket expenses. When I came across the Autism Visuals website I was impressed by the mission of the two people who started this website, the information and the resources they made available to families of people with autism. Their story is inspiring and brings us back to the idea that we need to make sure we’re providing our children with a functional communication system which accommodates their abilities. Children who are non-verbal are many times regarded as unable because they can not speak in the typical way. In my experience I have never worked with a person who is not able to communicate, but many times they do have a different way of communicating. We must ensure we find the best way for them to communicate to the world and for the world to communicate with them. This goal, in many circumstances, is best met through the use of visual supports to aide functional communication. This form of Assistive and Augmentative Communication (AAC) is vital for participation in the community in which people with autism live.

“Autism-Visuals.com was started by Matthew & Rachele Brownfield, who have an Autistic son, Jeremiah. Jeremiah was diagnosed days before his 3rd Birthday. This led the Brownfield’s on a journey to find the Resources, the tools, and the encouragement they needed to help their son! Prior to utlizing Visual-Aids with the PECS system–Jeremiah was completely Non-Verbal; He is now testing at Grade Level in School!

After attending Autism Conferences as well as Autism Parent Education classes, PECS Training and Classes, and TEACCH Training and Classes, a tremendous need for these Resources was realized, and a centralized location for Parents, Educators, and others in the Community to find them was needed! Most importantly, a final Realization was Resources needed to be FREE!

This gave birth to Autism-Visuals.com!” From the About Us section on www.autism-visuals.com
