How could we overlook it? The next big thing is the six-seater wagon, Bob Jennings reports. NO, IT’S not the rebirth of the old all-bench-seat Falcon taxi pack, nor a slimline people mover. The six-seater fits the new family dynamic; two parents, one or two kids and room for a couple of their mates, and a versatile load area. Ford Australia design director Simon Butterworth said the latest trend was packaged in such a way that it was acceptable to teenage kids who refused to be seen climbing into a people mover. The key to its design layout is three rows of two seats. Trying to package seven or even eight seats into a vehicle that looks sexy hasn’t been hugely successful. But prune it to six, with the three rows, and the parameters become more wieldy from a design point of view, Butterworth said. The Pacifica is a hunky-looking wagon and although it is two-wheel-drive there’s no reason the concept couldn’t be extended to all-wheel-drive to further its appeal. Butterworth said the Ford R7 concept designed in Australia was a “crystal ball” pointing the way towards the sorts of things that were possible on the local Ford platform, and on which a six-seater could be based.
Holden has broadly hinted that it, too, is looking very seriously at the idea as it expands the variety of two-and four-wheel-drive models which sit on the Commodore platform. “People are looking for a lot more variety in what they choose in their cars they’re looking at things that suit their lifestyles,” Butterworth said. “So a family with one or two kids needs something with which they can take maybe one or two of their kids’ mates to the footy or netball. “It is where these sorts of vehicles are aimed; it is a big area of opportunity.” Ford’s Japanese arm, Mazda, has followed a similar vein of logic with a concept it showed at Detroit this month, which it calls the Washu. Apparently the name means “eagle’s wing” in Japanese, and the car’s spacious interior has a low, flat floor and long wheelbase which give room for six “captain’s chairs”, each of which can be moved electronically around the cabin to offer a host of seating combinations.
Mazda has devised a door system that imitates that of an aeroplane. The rear doors first open outwards then slide back, giving an opening that extends up into the roof, allowing passengers almost to walk into the vehicle. The front doors open at right angles to the bodywork to enhance access. Read that as meaning that maybe some of the tricky door engineering features might be simplified, but the designers are thinking along the same accommodation lines and they’re not pursuing the ubiquitous people-mover fashion. Chrysler refers to the Pacifica, as a “sports tourer” and says it will be on sale before midyear. It defines it as a people mover-wagon crossover with “step-across entry and exit” and “first-class” seating. “As promised, the production version of the Chrysler Pacifica remains true to the concept that generated tremendous consumer interest,” Dieter Zetsche, president and CEO of the Chrysler Group, said when revealing the production version. “There is no other vehicle like Pacifica in the marketplace. With its low step-in height, three rows of seats and car-like handling, there’s no question that the Chrysler Pacifica will redefine the large vehicle marketsegment.” It will be powered by a 3.5-litre V6 with about 187 kilowatts of power. The second-row seats adjust fore and aft, recline and fold flat.
Additional features include a roof-mounted, flip-down DVD screen which provides in-carentertainment with eight-speaker surround sound for rear-seat occupants, and there is load-levelling suspension. Holden chief designer Michael Simcoe said the two-by-two-by-two seating in non-people mover bodywork marked a significant change. “Mercedes showed a six-seater concept as well in the Detroit show a year ago it is a re-segmenting of wagons and crossover vehicles,” he said.
“But the thing that impressed me about the Chrysler was that it was a production model.” He reckons the six-seaters will bemore than a niche segment of themarket. In the manner of designers who seem to have a brotherhood which crosses company boundaries, he said: “Everyone will have something like that.” Simcoe said wagons were still selling in Europe, but this latest variation would reintroduce wagon-style transport to the US and would possibly tempt American buyers away from their love affair with “trucks”, as they term big four-wheel-drives and utes.
“It is a vehicle that is far more comfortable than a people mover andit could be based on either a two-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive platform,” he said, adding that being based on a car platform, it would be a much easier vehicle to enter and leave and a nicer vehicle to drive than conventional big four-wheel-drives, which have bodywork sitting on top of a separate chassis. Quizzed on whether Holden was working on something along these lines, Simcoe remarked obliquely: “It’s an idea worth considering. “Chrysler has done what Australia has done very successfully in the past, in preserving interior space within as small an exterior package as possible.
” He said the venture into six-seaters was enabled by a buoyant car industry in which companies and their designers could be adventurous and explore alternatives to conventional forms. THE ORIGINAL Trevor Creed, Chrysler’s senior vice-president of design, unveiled this original concept of the six-seater Pacifica at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit 12 months ago. EURO VARIATION In Europe, wagons are regarded as sporty and lifestyle-oriented, giving rise to such vehicles as the new Volvo XC90, a crossover vehicle combining wagon styling with all-road mechanical features. MERCEDES FEELER Mercedes-Benz stuck a toe in the water with a three rows of two seats design a year ago when it unveiled the Vision GST concept in Detroit. It had “butterfly” doors, all-wheel drive and air suspension, and there were signs the concept was being examined seriously. NISSAN KINO Back at the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan showed the way designers were approaching the six-seater idea when it revealed the Kino six-seater concept. The Kino showed signs of trying to escape from the people mover mould. ELEMENTARY Honda has explored the versatile lifestyle concept that is an alternative to conventional 4WDs with the Element wagon, which is already in production in the US. Although only a four-seater, the seating is flexible and the rear seats fold for a flat floor.
